A resolution from the District of Sicamous Council to allow for the temporary location of community recycling services at the Sicamous Return-It Bottle Depot, means the CSRD will be proceeding with plans to re-start the downtown service before the end of the year. The decision ensures the CSRD will continue to meet its commitments with Recycle BC to provide a downtown recycling option in Sicamous.
At their October 23, 2019 meeting, District of Sicamous Council supported a motion in favour of locating the recycling services at the bottle depot, located at 322 Finlayson Street, for a maximum term of two years.
Currently the residents of Sicamous and Electoral Area E need to take their recyclables to the Sicamous landfill site for deposit.
“The CSRD echoes the comments made by the District of Sicamous regarding the benefits to residents, who will soon have easy and convenient access to this important service. We are both very pleased to see these services brought back into the downtown core,” says Ben Van Nostrand, CSRD Team Leader of Environmental Health.
At the November 21, 2019 regular meeting, CSRD staff will be bringing forward a recommendation to the CSRD Board to enter into an agreement with the bottle depot owner for a two-year term with a start date of December 1, 2019.
Locating the recycling services at the Sicamous Return-It Bottle Depot means residents will need to make fewer stops in order to recycle their items. This has been shown to increase the amount of recyclables collected. The types of materials collected at the depot will remain the same as at the landfill site.
The change will also mean increased hours for residents to be able to recycle. The previous Parkland Shopping Centre depot was open 24 hours per week. By locating the recycling service at the Sicamous Return-It Bottle Depot, the service will be open 36 hours per week − the same as the existing Bottle Depot hours of operation.
