The Shuswap Watershed Council (SWC) is awarding five grants this year to help farm businesses in the Shuswap watershed improve nutrient management, and ultimately protect water quality by reducing nutrient-loading to creeks and rivers.
The total value of the grants being awarded is $65,470. The expense was approved at the June 17 SWC meeting, with grants being awarded to the recipients pending site visits to the farms.
Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) Directors voted in favour of extending the services of the Shuswap Watershed Council for a three-year term until the end of 2023, pending formal approval of the bylaw by the Inspector of Municipalities.

With the Shuswap Watershed Council service set to expire at the end of 2020, the Inspector of Municipalities has indicated they are willing to extend it for a maximum of three years without a voter assent process.
Intense rainstorms predicted for the Salmon Valley did not deliver as much rain as expected over the weekend, greatly reducing concerns about severe flooding of the Salmon River. 
Lower-than-forecasted temperatures also contributed to reducing snow melt at higher elevations in the Shuswap, which helped moderate water flows in creeks and streams.
The Shuswap Emergency Program (SEP) is bringing in a specialized sandbagging machine to assist Salmon Valley residents with efforts to 
protect their properties.
The machine will be running at the Silver Creek Firehall with a crew starting in the morning on Saturday, May 30. Operation or the machine may continue on Sunday depending on the needs in the area.
