Preparations underway for outdoor ice rinks

Work is underway to get the CSRD's four outdoor skating rinks ready for outdoor recreation this season − but how quickly the rinks will be operational depends on Mother Nature.

Outdoor rinks are constructed for public skating at:

  • Parson Community Park at 3612 Hwy 95, Parson
  • Farrell's Field at 5051 Meadow Creek Road, Celista
  • Sorrento-Blind Bay Community Park at 2670 Davidson Rd, Sorrento
  • Silver Creek Community Park at 1577 Salmon River Road, Silver Creek

A brisk early blast of winter has some residents hopeful for an early start to the outdoor skating season, however, the weather forecast is predicting temperatures of above freezing with rain showers for next week. This means making ice will have to wait until temperatures reach a level of -7 degrees of lower for at least 10 days. A sustained period of cold is needed before ice rinks can be built and maintained according to rink safety standards.

The ability to open the outdoor rinks is entirely weather dependent. Parks contractors are working on preparing the rink areas and will get the rinks open safely as soon as conditions allow. As conditions differ widely across the region, it is difficult to predict an opening day for each rink at this time. Generally, outdoor ice rinks in the CSRD open in early to mid-December.

Check our Outdoor Ice Rinks page on our website, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram pages to find out which rinks are open.
