Meeting to discuss Wiseman Creek Early Warning System

A community meeting has been planned for Thursday, March 31 to keep residents informed of the soon-to-be-implemented Early Warning System to reduce the risk to residents from post-wildfire landslides in the Wiseman Creek area.

The meeting will be held at the Sicamous Seniors Centre, located at 1091 Shuswap Avenue, beginning at 5:30 PM.

Funding has been secured from the Province of BC to develop an Early Warning System that will assist in alerting residents in the Wiseman Creek area of the District of Sicamous to potential threats from post-wildfire landslides.

A study by the geotechnical engineering firm BGC Engineering determined that damage caused to the landscape from the summer’s Two Mile Road wildfire has made the slopes above the Sicamous Creek Mobile Home Park unstable and at risk.

The meeting topics will include discussion of:

  • the Early Warning System − what it is and how it will work,
  • what this will mean for residents in the area,
  • an action plan moving forward into spring freshet.
  • There will be an opportunity for the public to ask questions.

The Early Warning System is software system is designed to use weather forecasting data to determine whether an evacuation alert or order would be issued for residents in the area. It will be operational on April 1, 2022.
