[ARCHIVED] Update - Fire Situation - August 21 - 14:15 Hours

Fire Update August 21

Saturday, August 21, 2021

14:15 Hours

White Rock Lake Fire - Downgraded estimate - 80,745 hectares after additional mapping.

  • Throughout the week increasing fire behaviour had been observed along the northeast flank, east flank, and southeast flank. Suppression activities continue in all areas.
  • Some localized areas of the fire received precipitation this morning.
  • On the northeast flank of the fire, which is most applicable to the Falkland area, BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) crews continued with routine hand ignitions to secure the edge of the containment line, south of Irish Creek Road/west of Westside Road.
  • Planned ignitions will be conducted today if conditions allow. This will mean residents of the area may see more smoke, so the public should not be alarmed if this is the case. If residents believe they see a new fire start, they should always contact 800-663-5555 or *5555 on their cell phone.
  • There was no fire growth in the north head across Highway 97 or near Pinaus Lake.
  • Thunderstorms are forecast for the afternoon and evening, which could also have gusty winds that could increase fire activity. There is a similar forecast for Sunday, August 22.

Shuswap Complex Fires - (Two Mile, Hunakwa Lake, Crazy Creek Gorge, Three Valley Lake, Momich Lake)

Incident Commander Steve Lemon was pleased to see all containment lines holding and decreased fire behaviour throughout the complex during a fly-over yesterday. Cooler nighttime temperatures, especially at higher elevations, were helping to reduce fire spread.

Thunderstorms and increased winds may create more visible smoke, especially in the areas of Sicamous and Malakwa, however the fire was currently moving away from Sicamous. Lemon also noted very little threat to Malakwa from the Two Mile fire, due to the distance, terrain, higher overall humidity and the likelihood of precipitation.

Two Mile

  • Crews have been progressing northwards moving towards the head of fire direct attack spots discovered during patrols.
  • A heavy equipment task force on the northwest corner is cleaning up contingency lines.

Crazy Creek Gorge FSR

  • Now that perimeter nearest the communities has been contained, structure protection is being demobilized from the communities.
  • Industry personnel and heavy equipment continue danger tree clearing and widening roads for safety.

Hunakwa Lake

  • This will be the last day that BCWS considers this to be a "Fire of Note" and the status has been changed from Out of Control to Active.
  • Today, crews will also be patrolling and extinguishing hotspots that are burning deep in some of the areas closest to properties on the north flank. In a few days, a thermal imaging scan will be completed to determine if additional hotspots have popped up.

The Three Valley Lake fire has been shifted from Out of Control status to Being Held.

This will be the only update today unless the fire situation changes significantly.
