Firefighter Bag and Hat

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) presently delivers a rural fire suppression service to over 80 per cent of its electoral area residents. The service is provided by 13 paid on-call fire departments and by service extension agreements with municipalities and First Nations. Combining the coverage provided by rural and municipal fire departments, 95 per cent of all residents within the CSRD boundaries enjoy fire suppression service. CSRD fire departments are dispatched through the 911 program.

While the majority of residents are covered by a fire suppression service, portions of the Regional District are outside the boundaries of existing fire suppression areas. The CSRD will consider, on a case-by-case basis, extending the boundaries to those properties adjoining the existing service area. To find out more please email Protective Services.

Service Benefits

Residents with fire suppression coverage enjoy two benefits of the service:

  • The comfort of knowing that trained personnel and the best available equipment will respond to a fire (thus protecting you and your neighbors).
  • The substantial (in some cases up to 65 per cent) decrease in home insurance premiums. In most instances, the discount offsets the cost of the service completely.

How You Can Help Your Fire Department

All homes within the CSRD should have a house number. Emergency vehicles depend on those numbers for reference during a response. Please place your house number in a way that they are most visible to approaching vehicles. If you are unsure of your house number or an official number has not been assigned to your home, here's how to obtain a house number.

The fire department will do its utmost to reach you during an emergency with its firefighting equipment, but the responsibility to keep driveways accessible is yours. Keep your driveways clear of snow and obstructions.
