Thinking of buying or selling a house with a septic system? Get it inspected!
If you are thinking of selling or purchasing a property with an onsite septic system, it is strongly recommended that you have it inspected by a Registered Onsite Wastewater Practitioner (ROWP). Find an ROWP
An inspection will tell you:
- The location of the system and any encroachment issues
- The size of the system and whether it is adequate for the house and number of people living there.
- The health of the system and any repairs or maintenance required.
For sellers, if problems are found, they can usually be readily corrected, and this proactive step can help you sell your property more easily.
For buyers, while you may not have created the problem with the septic system, you are completely responsible for correcting it. Remember, a failed septic system can cost $15,000 or more to repair and replace.
